About the event
A controversial and glamorous decade, the 1960s in Italy! The economic boom was followed by sweeping socio-political and even artistic transformations, moments of reflection and criticism that influenced the world of creativity, generating new demands and new visions on how to experience life, live at home, work, dress and enjoy leisure time.
In 1961, the Salone del Mobile opened in Milan, consolidating the alliance between architects, designers and entrepreneurs at the origin of Made in Italy. Experimentation and new industrial processes marked the triumph of plastic materials, carriers of colour and creative freedom. Pop Art, at the Biennale di Venezia in 1964 and at the Fortezza da Basso in Florence in 1965, together with Radical Design and events that had an impact on the entire world, such as the flooding of Florence in 1966, the student protests of 1968 and the landing on the Moon in 1969, all played their part in changing the face of the creative scene in Italy.
The exhibition includes iconic masterpieces such as the Elda armchair and the monoblock Mini Kitchen by Joe Colombo, the Blow inflatable armchair by De Pas and D'Urbino, the Plia folding chair by Giancarlo Piretti, the Superonda multifunctional chair by Archizoom, the Bocca polyurethane foam sofa by Studio 65, and the legendary Sacco by Gatti, Paolini and Teodoro that was made famous by the comic acting performance of Paolo Villaggio in one of his films.
Fashion is represented by names such as Valentino, Capucci, Missoni, Schön, Balestra, Pucci, Ferragamo and Gucci. In the world of elegance, Galitzine's Palazzo pyjamas are all the rage, but the real novelties are the garments designed for the emerging youth market. Unusual materials are experimented with and the influence of art, both Op and Pop, is clearly visible: the collaboration between Alviani and Marucelli, a fundamental combination of fashion and art, is truly emblematic.
