Tana French’s novel, In the Woods, (the first of her Dublin Murder Squad Series) is for those who aren’t put out by the unexpected.
You won’t find the neatly wrapped up finish wherein, as per usual, the boy gets the girl and justice is had by all, where all problems are resolved and all enigmas deciphered.
The unexpected twists and turns, the flawed relatable characters, the complicated relationships are familiar and true because real life doesn’t fit into neat little compartments and things don’t always go as planned, or as needed or desired.
Reminiscent of Donna Tartt, Tana French’s book is a sharp novel, with dark notes, but also generously tinged with humour. Uncertainty and frailty co-exist alongside determination and strength. Understanding is important. The hows and whys and what ifs accompany us along the way right up to the last page.
I must admit, that I am not normally a reader of multi-volume works, but am already on the third from this series which is made up of (in this order): In the Woods, Likeness, Faithful Place, Broken Harbour, The Secret Place and The Trespasser.
